Ærø Eksperimentet - or the Ærø Experiment seeks to make regular folks on Ærø join forces in order to think up easy ways to act green on a daily basis. Ærø Eksperimentet is a community project, in which people from all walks of life discuss, exchange and share doubts, frustrations and tricks related to how difficult or easy it might be to better take care of our environment
In 2020, the Danish Government issued the Climate Plan of Action 2020 containing initiatives to engage citizens, businesses and civil society. It just doesn't seem to be happening, when it comes to us regular citizens.
Thus this experiment, which has been launched with the purpose of kindling and cultivating the green transition on grass root level; primarily through the exchange of experiences and dialogue deeply rooted in green fellowships and communities.
Delineated. Microcosmos. Resourceful.
Ærø Eksperimentet was designed for Ærø, because Ærø has something quite extraordinary to offer due to its unique demographics.
As an independently run island-municipality with roughly 6.000 permanent residents, Ærø is a well-defined geographical and administrative zone.
Ærø is a micro-society with a close-knit community of citizens, businesses and local politicians who know each other. It's also a culture that harbours many fellowships and small communities that make for the perfect foundation.
Being an island, Ærø has a naturally delineated geography and a manageable number of citizens, who are used to getting involved and who mostly know each other. Ærø is thus the ideal venue for a community-based experiment.
Ærø has it all - schools, a hospital, businesses, agriculture etc. –which makes it perfect as the venue for an experiment that reflects a common Danish model.
Ærø is neither too big nor too small for this experiment. It is in fact quite perfect as it represents a well-functioning microcosmos with the same workings as those of bigger communities, albeit on a manageable scale.
Despite being an island and labeled as rural and remote at that, Ærø is a fairly progressive place. Green energy-wise, the electric ferry Ellen is a good example; or the innovative hub Motorfabrikken in Marstal, to name but a few.
Ærø has a unique and powerful culture of entrepreneurship with deep roots and tight networks that will further pave the way for a project such as Ærø Eksperimentet.
"We have a moral obligation to preserve hope."
